On New Year's Eve

My husband and I are staying at home this New Year's Eve.  We are not going out tonight because he is fighting a cold and I am getting over a kidney infection.  We are also expecting freezing rain so it's a good idea not to be out on the roads!  Rather than go to a restaurant, we are still eating leftovers from Christmas.  Exciting, isn't it?  It's going to be a quiet night here.  I think we will have to open a bottle of champagne though.

We are watching "The King's Speech".  It's an  uplifting movie, perfect for keeping my mind off what is (or isn't) happening in Washington.  Will we go over the "fiscal cliff"?  If I drink enough champagne I won't care.

I wish everyone a happy and healthy 2013!

Note to Pam: "The King's Speech" is one of my favorite movies. I find it very uplifting. After we watched it tonight, we began watching several episodes of The Tudors". It, on the other hand, is rather depressing.

So pleased to see Geoffrey Rush enjoying success.
I remember the days when Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, Nicole Kidman, Judy Davis, and Russell Crowe were starting out on their careers.
When I was in my 20's, Rush and Gibson had not long graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney. Nicole Kidman was a freckly young red-head with long corkscrew locks.
Mel's wife Robyn was an Adelaide nurse- her parents lived not far from us at Norwood.
Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce were part of the cast of young people in a national soapie.
Those days were so long ago, and so very much has happened since.
I think that's why we Australians hold those actors and performers close to our hearts because we know how hard they've worked to get where they are today in what was at the time a highly competitive environment.

Wow, it's good to hear about these people from your point of view. Thank you for sharing. I always have the feeling that we don't hear enough about what's happening in the rest of the world. I was so pleased with Geoffrey Rush's portrayal and to learn about the real life story behind his character. It's a good thing when a movie not only entertains but gives us insight into history.
